James Bond’s Walther LP53 gun, used by Sean Connery in publicity shots for From Russia With Love and the N70CF Acrostar BD-5J Micro Jet used in the opening sequence of Octopussy will go up for auction at the Profiles in History Hollywood auction on July 29th, 2013.

Walther LP53 on auction James Bond

The Walther air pistol, model LP53, serial number 054159, was first used by Sean Connery for the promotion of his second “James Bond” film, From Russia with Love.

Walther LP53 Sean ConneryPublicist Tom Carlile arranged a series of poses with photographer David Hurn to shoot an iconic portrait of Connery as “James Bond 007” with this Walther pistol which was to be used as the primary image for the film’s poster art and advertising/marketing campaign.

What became of this shoot was one of the most iconic photographic images of the 20th century. The picture of Sean Connery holding the long-barreled gun across his chest or alongside his face became the most famous of all Bond images.

The gun comes with its original close-fitted Walther presentation case as well as a signed letter of provenance from photographer David Hurn. auction estimate $ 200,000-$300,000.

This gun had previously sold at Christie’s London in 2010 for a world record $437,000 (£277,250), read more here.

James Bond Aerostar on auction

Also on auction the original N70CF Acrostar BD-5J Micro Jet used in all of the flying sequences from Octopussy. In the opening sequence, Roger Moore backs a small jet out of a horse trailer, takes of from the road, flies over military troops, under a bridge, rolls in canyons and flies through an airplane hangar. This is the jet that was used in all the aerial sequences of the film.

The BD-5J has a 17 ft. wingspan and a small, streamlined fuselage holding its semi-reclined pilot under a large canopy. It holds the record for the world’s lightest jet aircraft, weighing only 358.8 lbs. (162.7 kg) and was capable of reaching 300 mph (480 km/h). The jet is so compact that it can fit in a rental truck with a 12 ft. cargo area with the wings detached.

The Octopussy flying sequences were performed by stunt pilot John W. “Corkey” Fornof. In addition to its most famous use in Octopussy, Fornof flew this jet in scores of television programs and commercials, such as “The Spectacular World of Guinness Records” (world’s smallest jet), “Good Morning America”, “25 Years of James Bond 007”, “That’s Incredible”, “ABCs Wide World of Sports” and countless airshows. In addition, this jet has appeared in virtually every aviation publication in the free world.

BD-5J’s were popular at air shows throughout the 1980s and many were involved in crashes due to the demanding high performance nature of the plane. The engine has been removed for exhibition purposes and the aircraft’s current air-worthiness is untested. Comes with signed letter of provenance by Corkey Fornof who has owned the jet since it was built. The estimated price is $200,000 - $300,000.

Update:
The Walther LP53 was sold for $250,000. There is no mention of the Acrostar sale price.

Bond car surfaces! Iconic 007 Lotus Esprit submarine car to go under the hammer

RM Auctions will auction off the one and only functional Lotus Esprit submarine car, used in the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), at its central London sale, 8–9 September 2013.

007 Lotus Esprit submarine car on auction

The vehicle to be offered by RM Auctions at its forthcoming London sale in Battersea Park, is the one and only fully functioning car especially designed and built for the famous underwater sequence seen on screen in the 1977 film. Abundantly authenticated, and known as ‘Wet Nellie’ on the set, it was developed from one of six Esprit body shells used in the making of the film. As the only car to be built into a fully operational, self-propelled ‘submarine’, by Perry Oceanographic, based in Riviera Beach, Florida, it is the vehicle which claimed the most screen time in the film. The driver of the car was Don Griffin, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL and test pilot for Perry, who operated the vehicle utilizing its motorized propellers while manoeuvring with levered steering mechanisms. At the time, the car was said to have cost over $100,000 to create (equivalent to nearly a half million dollars today).

  • Fully functioning submarine car was designed and fitted to propel underwater
  • The actual car seen, on screen, driving underwater; one of the most famous movie cars of all time
  • Never before offered for sale
  • Amazing story of ‘lost and found’

Subsequent to filming the underwater scenes in the Bahamas, the vehicle was shipped to Long Island, NY, where it was kept in an unassuming storage unit on a ten year rental, paid in advance. Fate later intervened when, in 1989, the then rent delinquent unit was put up ‘blind’ for public auction. A modest winning bid from an area couple brought surprise and wonder when the blankets were removed to reveal the iconic 007 ‘Submarine’ Car. After positive authentication, the Lotus was shown occasionally – including a stint at the Petersen Automotive Museum – but mostly kept closely under wraps, until now.

Max Girardo, Managing Director, RM Auctions, Europe, says: “We have a great track record in selling incredible and iconic movie cars, and this particular Lotus is certainly up there amongst the most famous cars of all time. Over the years, millions of moviegoers have stared in awe as the Lotus transformed itself into a submarine, and now, perhaps one of them will have an opportunity to own it.”

RM Auctions sold “the most famous car in the world”, the Aston Martin DB5 used by Sean Connery in the enormously popular Goldfinger and Thunderball movies, for an incredible £2.9 million during its 2010 London sale (read more).

Doug Redenius, Co-Founder, The Ian Fleming Foundation, on the Lotus Esprit: "It is believed that Lotus provided two production “road cars”, plus seven Esprit fibreglass body shells, to the filmmakers. One of those shells was reported to have been split in half to film Roger Moore and Barbara Bach in their separate seats. The remaining six body shells, delivered bare, were used to initiate and consummate filming the underwater scenes. Each of these shells was modified to perform specific functions in the movie. Here is the evolution of Wet Nellie on the screen:

1. Used for the tyre retraction sequence.
2. Used to portray the side fins protruding from the wheel arches whilst the periscope extends.
3. Featured in the below-surface-to-air missile sequence from the rear hatch.
4. Tethered to a powerful air cannon and jettisoned off the pier and into the water below.
5. The spare unit for the above.
6. The one and only fully enclosed shell used to film the functional Submarine Car.

Once filming was complete, the tyre shell (1) and the missile shell (3) were left behind in the Bahamas and given as souvenirs to Roberts Scrap Metal Company, who assisted with the heavy equipment for the shoot. The tyre shell exists today in poor condition in a Florida museum. The fin shell (2) has seemingly disappeared (with its whereabouts unknown), whilst the missile shell (3) is owned by the Ian Fleming Foundation and is proudly on display as part of the on-going 50th Anniversary of James Bond Exhibit at the Beaulieu National Motor Museum. The first of the pier shells (4) was damaged by the air cannon during filming in Sardinia, and it is presumed to have been discarded. The other pier shell (5) may have been unused or used more lightly; in any event, it was later unofficially retrofitted with mock up gadgets and sold in the late 1980s.
Which leaves the one and only functional Submarine Car (6), which is being offered to the public for the first time ever.

Lotus Esprit submarine RM Auctions september 1

Doug Redenius on the amazing story of lost and found: "In conjunction with the 1977 release of The Spy Who Loved Me, U.S. Lotus (Lotus East) executive distributor Fred Stevenson procured Wet Nellie for display at auto shows, according to correspondence between Stevenson and the location manager for Eon in the Bahamas. Stevenson remembers the Lotus was full of sand and seaweed upon delivery in New York and there was no time to clean it prior to its first public debut at the New York Auto Show! This was followed by appearances at shows in Cleveland, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles, by which time its custodianship was taken over by Lotus West. Stevenson relates having great fun with the Lotus, discussing its unique features with dignitaries and celebrities who enjoyed having their photographs taken with Wet Nellie.

Eventually, Wet Nellie was shipped to Long Island, New York, where it was kept in an unassuming storage unit in Holbrook, New York. The lease was reportedly for a 10-year rental, paid in advance. Fate later intervened when, in 1989, the rent delinquent unit was put up “blind” at public auction. A modest winning bid from an area couple brought surprise and wonder when the blankets were removed to reveal the iconic 007 Submarine Car. The roof had been damaged, but it was otherwise wholly intact. It’s new (and current) owners recount that, whilst towing it home, the CB radios of highway truckers were all abuzz about the sighting of the famed Lotus. After positive authentication, Wet Nellie was cosmetically restored and fitted to a custom-designed display trailer and exhibited occasionally, including a stint at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, but it was mostly kept closely under wraps... until now."

The Aston Martin Works Sale auction at Bonhams

The Aston Martin DBS driven by Sir Roger Moore in the British television series The Persuaders!, estimated at £350,000-550,000, will be offered at the Bonhams Aston Martin Works Sale on the 17th of May, 2014, together with several James Bond related lots.

Update 26 may 2014: see auction results below

Aston Martin DBS Bonhams auction

Car driven by Roger Moore's character Lord Brett Sinclair in the classic TV series The Persuaders!

This famed Aston Martin was manufactured in 1970, with special modifications made specifically for its role in The Persuaders!, in which it featured prominently in almost all of the show's 24 episodes. Starring Sir Roger Moore and Hollywood legend Tony Curtis, this TV series was to become the most expensive ever filmed to that time, shot in various glamorous European locales.

Both of the show's stars have autographed the car inside the boot lid – Roger Moore in 2003 and Tony Curtis in 2008 – and in each case the moment of signing was recorded.

Aston Martin DBS autographs Roger Moore Tony Curtis

Back in 1970, Aston Martin was invited by the producers to provide a car for Roger Moore in his role as Lord Brett Sinclair. Moore had expressed interest in the brand's DBS model, feeling it would be ideally suited to the character. With the decision made that Curtis' character was to drive a Ferrari Dino, the cars were intended to be important elements within the show and central to much of the action.

Naturally, Aston Martin was only too happy to provide a car for such a high-profile actor and project, even providing a works mechanic throughout the production to make sure the car was always capable of performing at its best.

Since Aston Martin had so recently launched their latest DBS V8 model, it made sense that this was the car that should feature in the show. However, full production of this new V8 version had not yet got into its stride and one could not be made available in time for the start of filming. The decision was made to use a standard DBS six-cylinder engine, but build the car as a DBS V8 in all visual respects, as if wearing "make-up" for its starring TV role.

One standard DBS was at the time nearing completion on the production line, in the rare color of Bahama Yellow, and this was deemed an ideal candidate. The factory modifications were limited to V8 wheels and hubs, and V8 badging.

Aston Martin DBS BS1 brett sinclair

Fans of The Persuaders! will recall that the car always wore the personalized registration plates "BS 1" (for Brett Sinclair). However there was one scene in the episode "The Gold Napoleon" when the production team forgot to switch the plates, thereby revealing the car's real-life registration number "PPP 6H".

After filming 24 episodes, Roger Moore was invited to take the role of James Bond in Live And Let Die, and so The Persuaders! was concluded. By this stage, the series' DBS had covered about 5,000 miles and taken a fair amount of punishment during filming. It was returned to Aston Martin Works for servicing and then sold to its first private owner in 1971. Today, the car has had five owners in total, and has only ever changed hands via private sale without advertising, never via a dealer nor auction.

After 24 years and 70,000 miles at the hands of the first three private owners, by the mid-90s the car was looking rather the worse for wear. Its fourth owner consequently commissioned a total restoration by Aston Martin itself, requesting that the car be returned to the exact specification that had existed at the commencement of filming The Persuaders!. The car retains all its main original components and even the leather interior did not require replacement - and most notably it has been serviced every year since 1997 by Aston Martin Works engineers.

The Persuaders! DBS was one of only 49 cars worldwide (one of five Aston Martins) to be invited to participate in the 2013 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este at Lake Como, Italy. It has also participated at Salon Privè in London 2011 and 2013 and has played a key role in several Aston Martin Centenary events. To the best of the current owner's knowledge, the Persuaders! DBS had never been displayed in public prior to the Aston Martin Owners' Club Spring Concours in May 2011.

Offered on the open market for the first time in its 44 year history, the Persuaders! Aston Martin embodies the precious assets of truly iconic status, unique original specification, impeccable restoration by its own manufacturer (with whom it has also accumulated a perfect maintenance record), and superb running condition. One of the most famous and most desirable cars ever to carry the Aston Martin emblem, this sale represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a true automotive icon which is also of popular cultural significance.

Other James Bond related items
The Aston Martin Works Sale also includes some photos and posters signed by the Bond actors (including Sean Connery!), several 1:8 scale Aston Martin models, including a DB5 with all the working gadgets, a Goldfinger Press Catalogue, and more, see all the listings here.

The Bonhams Aston Martin Works Sale is held annually at the factory in Newport Pagnell, and is now in its 15th year. Last year's sale achieved a 100% sold rate and a record total of £10 million.

Update 26 May 2014:

Auction Result

In its 15th year Bonhams Aston Martin Works sale totals at £8.7 million. Roger Moore's Aston Martin DBS which starred in the hit British television series The Persuaders! held pride of place at the front of the auction hall, attracting immense interest from fans of the show and Aston Martin enthusiasts alike, selling at £533,500 incl. premiums and setting a new world record for an Aston Martin DBS sold at auction. The famed DBS was specially modified specifically for its role in The Persuaders!, in which it featured prominently in almost all of the show's 24 episodes. Co-starring Roger Moore and Hollywood legend Tony Curtis, the car was arguably the third 'star' of the hit series, a motoring icon from the 70s.

Lot 555 Acrostar BD-5J jet from Octopussy

Acrostar bd5 auction

The original BD-5J jet aircraft used in Octopussy (1983). This jet was put up for auction earlier this year. The Acrostar was prominently featured in the opening scene of the film, which depicts Roger Moore, as agent 007, using the jet to escape his Cuban captors, who in retaliation attempt to shoot him down with a heat-seeking missile. Bond cheats death by flying through the narrow opening of an airplane hangar, which dramatically explodes behind him when the missile detonates.

The BD-5J (N70CF) was constructed by stunt pilot J.W. “Corkey” Fornof and began life as part of a three-man aerobatic demonstration team. In 1976, in honor of the nation’s bicentennial, the BD-5J was decorated with patriotic red and blue stripes over a white background. The Sonic Acrojets, as the team was known from 1978 on, was the world’s first civilian jet aerobatic team and took part in every major air show held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The BD-5J (N70CF) was featured in television commercials for Asahi Beer and Toshiba Electronics but it achieved the pinnacle of stardom in 1983 after being masterfully piloted by Fornof during the opening scene of the classic spy thriller “Octopussy.” The micro-jet has the added distinction of being listed in “The Guinness Book of World Records” as the lightest single-engine jet in the world. The BD-5J has a 17-foot wingspan (wings detach for transport), and measures 12 feet from front to back, and is capable of achieving speed of 300 miles per hour. NOTE: This lot does not include engine.

Lot 544 Ericsson JB988 phone

Ericsson phone

A 007 prop "cellular phone" from the film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997). The JB988 Ericsson brand mobile phone was conceived as a remote control device, taser and fingerprint scanner by James Bond's gadget master, Q. Until recently this phone has been on display in England for the Eon Productions Bond In Motion display.

Lot 545 Gateway 2000 Solo prop

Lot 545 Gateway 2000 Solo prop

Gateway 2000 Solo, serial number BC097071093, from the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997). The computer was used in the film by actress Samantha Bond, in her role as Moneypenny. It was later used by the film’s computer department for film production. The computer went on to become screenwriter Bruce Feirstein’s personal computer. In a letter from Feirstein that accompanies the lot, he mentions that he wrote revisions for the film and part of The World Is Not Enough on this computer. Labels affixes to the computer read “Moneypenny” and “007/ Film Crew.” Also present is a 19-volt adapter, an external disk drive, a mouse, instruction manuals, startup disks and an image from the film.

Lot 548 Die Another Day Hovercraft

Die Another Day Osprey 5 hovercraft

An Osprey 5 hovercraft in military green used in the James Bond Die Another Day (2002). The hovercraft has padding around the sides and was used in the chase scene that results in Colonel Tan-Sun Moon's death and Bond's capture.

Osprey 5 hovercraft

Accompanied by a typed, signed letter from Kip McCollum, proprietor and Managing Director of Osprey Hovercraft and designer of the Osprey 5. McCollum states that in the autumn of 2001, the craft design was chosen for the film, and 17 such hovercrafts were built, with only five left intact at the end of filming. This is one of the intact hovercrafts, but the engine is not original.

Gucci luggage man with the golden gunLot 553 James Bond prop Gucci luggage

A Gucci brand piece of luggage used by Roger Moore as James Bond in the film The Man With the Golden Gun (1974). Soft-sided with "GG" pattern, light brown leather accents, zipper and buckle closure.

Lot 559 Blofeld chair You Only Live Twice

office chair blofeld

A black office chair with tufted back used by villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld, played by Donald Pleasence, in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice (1967). The chair was acquired in the 1980s during a liquidation sale by Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom and later purchased by David Reinhardt from the Ian Fleming Foundation. Over the years, the base on the chair has been replaced due to wear and tear. The seat cushion has been restuffed as well, but the rest of the chair remains as it was during filming.

Lot 560 You Only Live Twice Helicopter prop

helicopter model you only live twice

A screen-used model Osato helicopter in You Only Live Twice (1967). The helicopter belongs to Osato Chemicals in the film and is seen in the aerial battle by a volcano between Little Nellie operated by Bond, played by Sean Connery, and a fleet of black choppers. This is believed to be the only surviving helicopter model in original screen-used condition. This model was exhibited for 10 years at the James Bond Room in Planet Hollywood, London and was previously owned by Dave Worrall, author of The Most Famous Car In The World and a noted Bond expert.

Barn find and project cars sold well, with a brace of 1958 Aston Martin DB Mark III Sports Saloons selling particularly well, one selling at twice top estimate, achieving £104,540, and the other at £115,740.

aston martin db mark iii

The DB Mark III is arguably the first ‘James Bond’ Aston Martin, appearing in Ian Fleming’s novel Goldfinger.

"As pioneers of the single-marque sale, we've returned to the Works Service here in Newport Pagnell for another great auction, exceeding all previous year's totals, with £10.3 million of motor cars sold," said Bonhams UK Head of Motor Cars. "The quintessentially British marque of Aston Martin attracts interest from enthusiasts across the world, a fact demonstrated here today as we took bids from all corners of the globe. This year's sale attracted a larger and more cosmopolitan than ever before, achieving an excellent result.

"The market demonstrated that there is a ready appetite for exceptional examples, even for models that had previously been regarded as not particularly fashionable. The result we achieved for a Virage Coupe illustrated this with £74,300 realized for the stunning 1990 model."

Barn find and project cars continued to demonstrate their popularity, with the 1958 Aston Martin DB Mark III Sports Saloon selling at twice top estimate, achieving £104,540, and a 1959 Aston Martin DB Mark III Sports Saloon soaring above top estimate, selling for £115,740. Paul Spires, Commercial Director at Aston Martin Works, said: "Today's Aston Martin Sale has been another hugely memorable occasion with keen bidding, strong sales, and rare and collectable Aston Martin sports cars going to buyers around the world.

"Despite the mixed weather there was a superbly sociable 'garden party' atmosphere among the 2,000 or so Bonhams guests who joined us here today – enjoying the sale and helping us to celebrate our 60 years in fine style."

1965 Aston Martin DB5 on auction expected to fetch $950,000 - $1.6M

The value of the stunning Aston Martin DB5 keeps rising and a beautifully restored Sage Green DB5 is expected to fetch between $950,000 - $1.6M USD at the Rolling Scuplture auction in New York on November 19th 2015.

Aston Martin DB5 auction 1

It is undeniable that the DB5, designed by Carrozzeria Touring, was elevated to design icon status largely due to its pivotal role in several James Bond films, starting with Goldfinger in 1964. The DB5's association with James Bond did double Aston Martin’s sales overnight, and has remained an important selling point to this very day. Regardless of any extra attention the affiliation with 007 and the films may have generated for the Aston Martin, it is also irrefutable that the DB5 was, and continues to be, recognized as a splendid, masterful piece of automotive design. While the car was conceived well before Goldfinger's producers ever thought to put it in the film, it is fascinating that the final design turned out to be every bit as unique and enigmatic as 007 himself - a highly-sophisticated and polished gentleman, who conceals his efficiently brutal abilities under his skin.

Aston Martin DB5 auction 2

The car at the Keno Brothers Rolling Sculpture Auction is from 1965, engine no. 400/1099, in the color Sage Green with a tan leather interior which fits the car really well.

The car is in excellent condition after an amazing restoration and is registered with Aston Martin Owners Club.

Aston Martin DB5 auction 4

Another Bond related car in the auction is a rare 1968 Toyota 2000 GT Coupe. James Bond drove a custom convertible version of the 2000GT in You Only Live Twice. The one on auction still has a roof, so if you want to make it screen accurate, you might have to saw off the top of this car with an estimated value of $600,000 - $1.2M USD.

The line up of cars in the auction is truly impressive, including a 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S, 2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Prototype, 1990 Ferrari F40, 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series 1, 1934 Duesenberg SJ Continental Touring Berline By Rollston, 1969 Ferrari 365 GTB4 N.A.R.T. Competizione and a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Coupe.
